i'm a fan of-
Lance Wyman
Saul Bass
Chermayeff&Geimari also think Michael Bierut would be a solid smart option today for a company or museum.

Yes, of course, Rand, Bass, etc. but current... I agree, Bierut seems to be getting interesting projects...

Of people still alive and kicking, I'd agree with C&G and Michael Beirut, and would add Paula Scher, Winkreative, Duffy & Partners, Moving Brands, Madethought, Mike Abbink, and Kris Sowersby. Many others, but those come to mind as people who design great logos on a fairly regular basis.

Young (for the tone, the note)
This is not a competition, not even the stars michelin. The best on what? In managing the budget? to get more customers? to be "better" remembered? to sell more? in like the chorus of designers?
Each in his time. I imagine that the cross design of Christians as a sign, or cross of the Swiss in the field of battle, to be recognized in the field of battle and then be rewarded economically. From Peter Beherens, to Raymond Loewy, until today. A lot of the best

I'd wager that Doyald Young was the best logotype designer to ever walk the planet. RIP.
