fiver..
a few things.. Time Machine can be flakey..
1. It can be picky about your selection of hard drive.. the iOmega one might be the culprit in your case
2. If that's not the case, make sure you wipe everything on that backup drive, kill the partitions, recreate everything with Journaled NFS+
I can't tell you whether or not Time Machine stops backing up if your Mac goes to sleep as I haven't checked.. BUT I have absolutely no problems with Time Machine.
I did have problems with it initially when I did a clean install of OSX.. same machine after 3 years mind you.. same Mac Pro.. but for some reason Time Machine kept giving me error message that it won't backup stuff..
I did my 2 things above and since then I had no issues.

and what drive do you use?

i'm an idiot, where do i find h FS+? I see "First-Aid/Erase/Partition/RAID... Can't find an option for it. Is it under one of these? Says the disc is fine, but man, it's slow and buggy. Sorry for the questions. Just frustrating.
- as I said, if it's slow but still works, it's probably iOmega shit dude.. they are not so great these days.Boz

Disk Utility..
You see in the shot below. I have TIme Machine partition..
You want to erase that partition completely and every partition present on that disk by going erase (keep in mind that will completely wipe your drive)
Then.. you click on the actual DRIVE like in the screen below:
And you make ONE BIG partition and you select on the right Mac OS Extended (Journaled)..
And then hit apply..
Disk Utility will create a new empty, single full size partition and set it to be in HFS+ Journaled mode.
You see.. your iOMEGA external drive might have additional partition where they keep those utility tools and recovery shit.. and Time Machine starts doing crap when you have more then 1 partition and it's not HFS+ Journaled.

Back in ’82, I used to be able to throw a pigskin a quarter mile.

I use daily SupeDuper! backups, Time Machine doesn't make a bootable disk clone and leaves some files behind.
