"As noted by the Financial Times, Apple has officially passed Nokia to become the world's top smartphone vendor. Apple's rapid growth paired with a sharp drop in shipments for Nokia allowed Apple to turn a 5.5 million unit deficit during the first quarter into a 3.6 million unit lead in the second quarter."

I have an android now, prob have an iphone someday but right now I would rather not get locked into a att/verizon chokehold when the key attributes of the phone are available in the itouch with no contract. It would be nice to have my whole deal synced up all sweet like but not for 100 bucks a month when I can have an iphone called an android for 50 bucks a month. Thats 600 bucks a year.

    • check out Virginmobiles LG optimus V. Not the greatest but pretty fing sweet to me.duhsign
    • oh and smaller than an iphone and some other androids...winduhsign

"The important part is that even though, all of us might not share the same likes and dislikes or views on things, I really enjoy discussing things about coding, development in general, design and technology, just as long as it’s kept civil."

"just don't go around telling other people that every other phone sucks and it's all good."

This thread was started by an obvious Apple hater trying to flame Apple. Boz, you have the worst memory ever. You don't remember what you put in your own bio or even what you said at the beginning of this thread. It's fun.

"Also Boz might favour one platform over another, but I think he has a better grasp on development across multiple platforms than 90% of users on these boards."

The discussion never had anything to do with development. It was about an Apple-hating, flash platform evangelizing clown running his mouth ignorantly. You'd be surprised what people on this board know, but it wouldn't matter anyway when you have one prick predisposed to not look at things objectively.

    In other news..HTC abandoning WP7

    http://communities-dominate.blog…

I would definitely love to have Android and WP7 or W8 version for phones and tablets to choose from. Both will be available on many devices and our laptops and desktops etc..

Why iOS and Apple needs to be put in irrelevant marketshare is because MS even through proprietary licenses out their mobile OS and platforms.. and is really a good competition.

Android has matured so much that it's really one kick butt smooth, fast, awesome OS. Not to mention that you can do whatever the hell you want with it because it's open. No restrictions.

I would definitely like to see Android running first, WP7/W8 as a close second as it is the only real eco-system that's ok for consumers as far as hardware choices go and it will most definitely work great with the rest of our computing lifestyle and then whatever is left to let Apple and RIM play with.. They really don't deserve more than 15% market-share together with the inferior product and non-existant choices.

    • You remind me of one of those clowns that uses Ubuntu because it's "open."antagonista

Ah, it all makes sense now. An angry self-declared "flash evangelist" lashes out at the man, the company that tried to kill his baby. hahahaha.

    So transparent.

What are the stats for app store purchases on iOS vs Android?

Coverage will be stronger on Android. Good for value apps.

    • most apps are shit, you use them for a few weeks and then never again. So that shouldn't matterMiguex

Apple is going to have to step up their game, and the only thing they need to do is be more flexible in terms of freedom to it's users. Stop being so greedy and think of your audience. Android phones are good, and have a lot of plus sides but if you used both phones chances are you won't feel comfortable w the android system (or maybe you do, it was just my impression)

I had to jailbreak my iPhone in order to tether my laptop, on android is SO EASY to create a network for any computer, I'm actually jealous of that.

Reception on AT&T is a disaster, the verizon move was necessary but they still need to work on competitive prices.

They still have the best OS in my opinion, and that's the only reason for me not switching to android, but they became too controlling and greedy and people are starting to get fed up with it.

The whole flash thing is a scam, I love apple but there is nothing wrong with flash, they are greedy and don't want to include it on their hardware, that's all

    • excellent post. honest and true!
flash on single core is tough, but dual core its a piece of piss, cmon apple.

Okay..let's play that silly little statistics game.

Whether or not Apple sells most phones as manufacturer is completely irrelevant. It doesn't really mean squat to consumers or market-share because the two economic models are hugely different in sales.

Yes, Apple chose to close it's platform and offer only 1 phone to be sold. So if their platform does any good they will sell a shit ton of their 1 phone. This will of course pump up the numbers (percentage wise) when compared to any 100s of manufacturers of the opposing platforms but means NOTHING to anyone but marketing and fanboy justification.

It only means that Apple's and iPhone users are severely limited and have absolutely no choices. They have to either buy that one phone or not. And if you chose to be in that eco-system you are pretty much forced to buy that 1 phone from Apple. For better or worse.

On the other hand, Android's market is spread out to huge number of manufacturers and it is logical and economically reasonable not to expect that any of the individual Android smartphone manufacturers will make as much as Apple individually. At least not until this smartphone market is so small. It's growing but it's still very small.

Actually,Android smartphone eco-system is much healthier overall because it fosters competition and creativity. It allows choice and to pick a cheaper Android phone, or mid-range Android phone or high-end Android phone, one with the keyboard, or one with dual screens or completely different designs etc etc and Android's market is diversified. And in that, it's nearly impossible for one manufacturer to be dominant in that eco-system.

As world adopts Android and we see more and more 600-700% growth in various work regions it's only a matter of time before individual Android smartphone manufacturers outpace the number of sold units per phone (compared to Apple) because the number of potential customers grows with the marketshare and once it hold 50-60% of the smartphone world the best Android manufacturers will sell more and more phones, even individually.

We can already see that with Samsung and HTC.. They keep having RECORD profit quarters and amazing growth as well. Samsung alone is selling about half the number of iPhones worldwide with their Android phones. Galaxy S2 alone has sold I think about 3 million a quarter. Just that 1 model of many Samsung smartphones. This is the same reason why Apple is in panic and is suing everyone. They are trying to stop them in selling phones and why their lawsuits specifically request a ban on import.

Naturally the economy also shows that Apple will always have higher profit margin because they don't compete with Android manufacturers in that eco-system. But that's good and bad because if you stay at 10-15% market-share you have no growth. And eventually your users get sick of that one phone you have.

This is why RIM and Nokia had huge success over time. They understood the value of choice and offered several models even within their own eco-system. Nokia held the market because the situation was very different then and people were buying smart-phones based on hardware and what phone was spec-ed and it was very niche market.

Either way, the whole Apple sells more iPhones than any Android manufacturer is hilarious at best and is really 100% marketing and stat whoring that means nothing to anyone but fanboys :)

Reality on the other hand, shows that tracking platform growth is far more important than individual manufacturer sales.

I go full circle back to my first post. Ultimately, who cares? Without competition it all sucks. No platform, device bats 1000, none ever will. That was never the point, the real curiosity I have is why dumbfucks expend so much energy attacking and hating something that they don't have to buy. That's very different than being happy about what you actually bought.

But in this case I bothered to reply because this jackass (Boz) is completely clueless about the industry, business models, design methodology and the list goes on. A partisan hack at best, an actionscript stooge mad at steve jobs for smacking flash at the worst. It's the latter and it's sad.
