I need help getting something like this done but don't know wether it's a Flash guy I need.
So, this one is obviously flash...
Is this version Flash too? Or After Effects or a 3D package...
If so, what's (very roughly) the difference in cost implications between the two styles?

1st one could have been done in AE too
2nd one AE using just some 3d layers (only watched up to 1:40 though)

can be done in flash or ae just search for Kinetic Typography.
here is an ae tut:

if you need a vid (not a .swf) get an AE guy.
vid 1 could have been done in either flash or AE, but would be faster to make this in AE since AE you dont have to worry so much about having the imported images at exact size so you dont get that weird pixelating issue.

Yeah I was going to say you could do either in either, though I'd rather do it in AE for sure.

Any ideas roughly on what a 5min video like that second one would run ya?
- Based on a hourly rate per 1 min of video, I'd say 1000$ per min. This included revisions (in my case 4-5)
.lobstarr - But that can definitely shrink, I wouldn't take that as a rigid rule to follow (1000$/1min)lobstarr
- are you looking for someone to design it as well or just to animate it? im assuming there's a copy writer involvedmoldero

get an animator.

Both 1 & 2 are entirely AE. Typical AE techniques used there.
The "letter swinging" is from the 3D options, as someone mentioned.
The words sliding in a path, or rotating around the Globe in a 360... All AE. Also, some people use something call the "camera" tool to get the effect of getting close/ zoom in and out from the words or rotating the words from the next frame. The cost can be pretty high, since unlike interactive or print work, this takes a lot of rendering time. very time consuming.

lol second video is using Andrew Kramer's Sure Target. Get an animator to do this, but if they know sure target they can bust this out with a quickness, especially if you already know what you want it to look like.

Remember you get what you pay for, and not at all saying yours wouldn't be good for 3k, Ben, but if you try and get it on the cheap then you'll piss people off in the first 10 seconds and they won't watch it through. Get it right, though and it's viral.
- itll cost 7K if the client realizes after week that watching 5 min of text flying in/out is too long...benr0ck

These are both AE. I once worked on a similar project and got paid $2500 for about 1 minute. Client set the price, so I was OK with it! ; )

if the script is pretty locked then this could be done with sure target in a week. i would tell the client that 5 minutes of this type of animation is asking a lot of the viewers attention span.
and like any project, this could take a week, or it could take 3 weeks (the diffference of 3k to 7k) all depending on if the client knows what they want.
