I'm going to be in london for a week and want to know where I should stay. Hoping for somewhere equivalent to downtown Manhattan... anyone got any thoughts on neighborhoods or lodging?
I have no plans or ideas or even know what to do when I'm there. I suppose things to do would be another category of info that I'm open to.
I'll be there the week of May 10th.

Lambeth, Stockwell, Wathamstow, East Ham, Tottenham, all at night. I lived in all f them, nothing much there really.Stay in Shepherds Bush, Pimlico, Hackney, Finsbury Park, Chalk Farm/Camden. There's a hostel in pimlico / belgravia that's pretty good for locality and price - very near Pinlico tube and Victoria station.

Thanks foz!
I will be there from may 13 to may 16.
Just a question, could someone hook me up with either 2 Arsenal vs Aston Villa or Chelsea v Newcastle tickets? Or is it too hard to get at this time? Anyways, if someone you know it is not going! ;)and may 27 to may 29 for the CL Final, and I hope Barça makes it!

Nearest Downtown London equivalents (in my opinion).
LES : Shoreditch / Hoxton / Old Street
East Village: Bethnal Green / Haggerston
West Village & Soho: Notting HillOther great areas to stay would be Angel, Camden, Clerkenwell
Avoid Leiscester Square, Piccadilly, anything east of Mile End

airbnb.com have apartments to rent with reasonable prices. it also provides a nice view into life in London, not just as a tourist.

A bonus, it is a concealed international casual sex network— someone who's been using it tells me.
