Is it possible to handle my iTunes library within an external drive?
I have over 90 GB of music on a WD USB drive, I don't want to put them on my laptop...

itunes just needs a library to point to. don't see why it can't be on your external. might give you a nasty error every time you go into iTunes without the external plugged in though.
I have mine on an external HD connected through ethernet. But I think I set it up as a shared library.

Me too. You can set up your drive and transfer all your files through iTunes so you don't have to recreate your playlists. Go to preferences, Advanced and change your iTunes Media and click the Reset button.

as MrNibs says, you can point to a location of your iTunes library file by holding ALT+SHIFT on your Mac. Then pick Choose LIbrary.
You can also set that any purchases you make on any of the computers you have iTunes puts the file there.. so your iTunes becomes just a client on every machine.
That thing Copy files to iTunes library folder when adding files.

That's how I do it with all of my files. Keeps my laptop nice and clean. Just don't forget to get a second HD to back it up.

I use an external drive. However, iTunes is constantly forgetting where the location of the files are. It seems whenever the drive unmounts, iTunes forgets the path. You would think that it would save/remember the previous path to the file and look for it when the drive is re-mounted but for some reason it doesn't. At least with my iTunes it doesn't all the time. I've got as gazillion tracks in iTunes that are missing which are all located in the same place (MyBook > Shared Music > Artist Name Folder....as simple as it gets)

Hold the "option" key when starting itunes and then choose your library. It should not forget the next time you connect unless that drive is not available.

i did this on my mac using a 1tb firewire drive and my only complaint is that it's really slow and sluggish. renaming the genre on a group of say 10 songs literally takes nearly a full minute. it's quite annoying.
