i went camping around beacon not too long ago... metro north ticket + inexpensive campsites (that provide tents etc.) + dia... was really easy and quick.

You could head up 95 to Madison, CT. Beautiful, quiet, beach town. Stayed at a b&b when we got married for several days. Whole trip cost under 700 I believe.

Stay in a hotel in neighborhood that you would not normally be in.
Its down season for NY hotels, so you will get a deal.

Don't forget Governor's Island! As soon as it gets warm out pack a picnic and head over on the free ferry. Nice afternoon getaway for when you don't have time to leave the city. View of Statue of Liberty and downtown, etc.
