  i went camping around beacon not too long ago... metro north ticket + inexpensive campsites (that provide tents etc.) + dia... was really easy and quick.

  You could head up 95 to Madison, CT. Beautiful, quiet, beach town. Stayed at a b&b when we got married for several days. Whole trip cost under 700 I believe.

  Stay in a hotel in neighborhood that you would not normally be in.

  Its down season for NY hotels, so you will get a deal.

  Don't forget Governor's Island! As soon as it gets warm out pack a picnic and head over on the free ferry. Nice afternoon getaway for when you don't have time to leave the city. View of Statue of Liberty and downtown, etc.

  Went there for a long weekend in the Fall - gorgeous hiking. Lots of quaint B&B's around. Place above is $$$ and you're not allowed in to the grounds without a reservation.
