hello, need help with after effects.
im on 4gb imac, and my preview is like 1 frame in 3 seconds.
Is there a chance to get a realtime preview in after effects?

You could...
lower the playback resolution (probably on full,, try half or quarter)
lower the playback framerate (check the 'preview' playback options)
it all depends on the nature of what your doing? (size of content/elements images, vectors, effects etc.)

you can set the preview-resolution in the RAM-Preview window. normally it should be Auto.
it depends also on how much ae has to render before showing the preview, so if it's some intense layered + millions of effects comp you are trying to preview, yo should pre-render as much as you can and import it as movie.

what's in your comp? sounds like you have tons of effects, lights, shadows or such like.
In which case just try and get an impression in your minds eye then render out what you wanna see, go back and adjust accordingly.Obviously you can reduce your preview to half quality etc

i just have a video in mpeg!

try this...
- Yolo0
convert the mpeg to an animation quicktime

Try to purge memory before you RAM preview. Could be a factor.

try "shift+ram-preview" this will render every other frame in the work area for preview.

"Is there a chance to get a realtime preview in after effects?"
No it needs to render first, taking 3 seconds to render 1 frame sounds a bit excessive. It's hard to say why it's taking that long without seeing the file.
Are you importing or pre-comping very high res files? Or have any intense filters going on?
Might have to turn particle effects down while animating and then turn them up again for an overnight render, for example.

4GB is a bit low for AE.
Things that could help:
decrease preview resolution (pulldown on the bottom of composition window or from RAM preview window). From the composition window you can also select the little lightning icon for other preview options (e.g. wireframes).
Set preview to skip frames in RAM preview window.

Didn't want to start a new thread, but hoping to get some AFX help. Anyone ever opened a RED R10K encoded .MOV? My Quicktime won't let me open it, wondering where to buy this codec for quicktime/AFX, if possible.
- That red stuff is insane to me 3 /4 K ?? Lordy.. can't wait to get a machine good enough. :)
mikotondria3 - I know. Nuts. The footage looks insane though, can see why they film at this res, so much detail in the shots.nthkl
- yeh guys 4k is mental!! So flexible with grading too. I've never worked with it though.Hombre_Lobo

you can download REDCINE-X for free and open/transcode it in that to something more AE friendly like ProresHq maybe.

Iirc after effects have problems with mpeg because its ...i forget the word.
Basically mpeg doesn't have all the frames, its an interpolated video type, which means all the frames aren't there.

- excuse me?Hombre_Lobo
- long gop is the term for mpeg compression that groups frames and makes it hard for some programs to readJulesvm

You can also close all of the panel inspectors, that'll help a bit. Think you just hit the tilde (`) key. And what Cybrain said, purge that shit yo. Edit >Purge All (I think, don't have AE open rght now)

I looked in other threads and couldn't seem to find the answer to this, so sorry if it is a repost..but...
I just rendered my final AE file, full resolution, best settings, etc. It all looks great, except some of the text that I created from within AE is rendering fuzzy. I didn't stretch it out or anything, and since I made it in program I THOUGHT it would stay crisp.
Any ideas on what could be making it fuzz?
- also, I am using a camera, but it isn't doing any crazy zooms on the parts where this text is..bananana
- uan0
are you screening it at 100%?
otherwise, just move your text a bit (0.1px steps) till it's sharp.
- animatedgif0
Hombre_Lobo is right in my experience.
If you are using an MP4 or some other compressed format then it will be slower for after effects to render. Use uncompressed .mov format..mov will store every frame perfectly and AE knows exactly where to find them.
a compressed format usually has to be assembled from several pieces of interpolated data which will play better in a media player because it's shifting less data about but actually has a negative effect in AE.
- Hombre Lobo was right?...
im scared :/Hombre_Lobo - thanks for the info dude, good to know why that happens :)Hombre_Lobo
