Beautiful place, original capitol of Guatemala but destroyed by volcanic eruption... you can still visit old places half covered in lava.
If your in guatemala you might also want to visit panajachel.... (beautiful lake flanked by 3 awesome volcanos)
And if you can make it out there, PETEN is where its at, visit Tikal, the center of the Mayan civilization.
If you like the strange, you might want to visit San Simon (Maximon) pre-Columbian Mayan god who indigineous people still take tobacco and rum to. really weird, thats in Xela.
Guatemala is an awesome place to be if youre into archelogical type exploration... tons of ruins all over the place.
Maybe make it out to the beach to witness some of the blackest sands in existence... take some sandals cause itll burn the hell outta yo feet.
And when in antigua, make sure to listen to an ol school marimba band somewhere.... its really the flavor and soul of that place.
Enjoy!
- Thanks!CALLES

i stayed in antigua for a short weekend a couple years ago, but don't really remember the names of any of the places we visited. my only suggestion is rent a scooter and sight-see that way. that was fun.
i remember we took a bus to some big lake. nice drive, but pretty scary going up those narrow dirt roads and playing chicken with other buses.

I stayed a couple nights in Antigua (pronounced with a guh at the end, not gwuh.) It seemed to be the least friendly place in the Caribbean that I've ever been. Some fucker almost mowed down a crowd of people with his car in the little shopping area downtown, people all over the street, he just came right at 'em blaring his horn.
Couldn't find a place open to buy smokes after 10pm or so, I even stopped in the local jail to ask where to buy some. :) Finally found some after walking down a pretty dark alley because I saw a little store that seemed to be open. "Fuckin' Benson & Hedges lights is all you got?! Fuck it, I'll take 'em."
The jail had a counter when you walked in like a fast food place and people locked up right there next to you. Basically a lobby with bars between you and the inmates.
Now Barbados, that's a friendly island with it's proper English heritage. Everybody honks all the time, but it means hello, go ahead and cross the street, go ahead and get in my lane, shit like that.
- hmm.. island or central america?CALLES
- oh, oops, I was talking about the island. thought there was 2 destinations here. nevermind.johnny_wobble
- hah. yeah barbados is nice.akrok

I was there a couple years ago, Antigua felt very safe... Much safer than say, the capitol... def be careful in the bigger cities, saw some guy get robbed at gunpoint right in front of me while walking down the street one day.... be careful, smart, and you'll be allright.
