Small Icon sets

Hey there,
I'm looking for tutorials on small/micro icon design. A good example of what I'm talking about is -

not really done this but i think you start doing the stuff in 256x256, then work it down. like 128x128, 64x64, 32x32 and 16x16.

Yea that makes sense. It seems like quite the art form.
Maybe 8bit nintendo, video game designer would be a good resource?

In the case of Facebook, I do believe they were designed for 16x16, use the software Akrok posted and just use the 16x16 template. Either that, or you can just use photoshop and zoom in, working pixel by pixel with the pencil tool. After a while, you'll get the hang of what works and what doesn't.
