Maine residents: HELP!

My man and I are moving from Seattle to Maine in three weeks and need a place to live. He works in Auburn and I work from home, so anywhere within an hour is fine. We have three cats and a dog. We've found that makes things a bit more difficult, but we've also found many people are flexible and with the right amount of coercion (and money) will consider us.
We've been scouring Craigslist for weeks and weeks and find very little that looks even remotely updated. We also tried to buy a house but another guy came along just before us and offered cash (this was really heartbreaking — the house was really, really incredible). Two other amazing rentals have fallen through as well, and now all that seems to be left out there is pretty depressing.
Anyone here have a lead or a suggestion for me? We're pretty open to where we live, but prefer not to be in Portland. We've done city. We're looking for something a bit more small town for now.
Ideas? Suggestions? Is Craigslist really the only good resource for this shit now?

So living in a rural area with four pets is unacceptable?
- d_rek0
I apologize. I'm grumpy and really only read upto 4 animals before embarassing myself.

Come on, turnerworks. Do I really need to mention I've used Google for you not to assume we haven't?

Trick question, no one lives in Maine.
- DaveO0
I'd probably think twice about coming on here for any actual advice.

Not many qbners are from maine. Here's a list though:
most of them look like they haven't been on here in a while.
(if i pasted the original google search in here it would probably not paste right)

Your opening post was too long so I didn't read all of it. Just a little way into the first paragraph...
But I have an idea... why don't you try a doggy grooming parlour and treat the cats to some freshwater fish?
- Orbit0
Oftentimes men get cranky just how you describe it because of the testosterone levels that build up when they done have any outlet for their manly needs. Why not get him out on the hills, trekking and/or hunting in the fresh air with his bowie knife and earmuffs, and maybe he will find a quite spot by a river, to sit awhile and knock one out.
He'll be much happier once he's emptied those bottles and come back home for a nice warm slice of pie.

Every time I post here I leave asking myself the same question: "Why did I think it would be any different this time?"
