What type of things do you think are more likely to become "Trendy" in design / illustration?
**subject matter (antlers, birds, elephants, owls, rainbows, etc)
**technique/feel (retro, Scandinavian folk, vector silhouette, etc)
**conceptual (cassette tape that makes face with ribbon, animal heads on human bodies, etc )

What trends are more likely to be trendy in the future?
Odd question...

The question is
do trends tend to be base more on subject matter, technique or concepts .. or do they evenly touch all those categories

all those things have been trendy already.
the future is long enough for anything to be trendy at some point.

When it's practical it's not trendy, when it's trend it's unpractical.
..and What Amicus said.
...and it all goes in circles anyway. Look at hipsters.

Trends can be conceptual, but we tend not to notice these because they don't change as often. The visual language and copy for an ad back in the 50s or 60s was very different from how you would approach it now. We pay more attention to the stylistic trends though and not the conceptual ones.
