Im in the middle of doing my first super last minute self assessment tax return and was wondering if anyone had advice on what can be claimed as business expenses? My folder with most of the receipts for that period dissapeared when I was moving house so thats fucked, im wondering about more general stuff like can I claim some of my rent if I worked out of my room? Any pointers greatfully received

surely someone that (lives in the uk and) calls themselves straighthola wouldn't suffer the indignity of working out of their bedroom.
the taxman will see straight through that my friend.

I think you can claim a percentage of the heating and lighting bills for the space in your house that you work in as a business expense. Don't think you can claim back actual rent on a residential property, even if you work in it. Although I might be wrong.
Also, don't put bought equipment in general expenses - there's a separate section for that.

A friend has just told me that you can claim a % off bills - electricity and phone but not rent. She said all the advice is online saying what you can and can't claim for

cheers guys, The online info is pretty sketchy on that front, i couldnt find anything specifically about rent so was hoping for some grey area. A mate told me he put half his through as an expense so i reckon he needs to be hoping he doesnt get audited.

you can totally claim rent if you work from home (ie. your home office as a percentage of your rent based on how many rooms in the house etc.) but don't do it if you work from your bedroom in a shared rental or can't prove it...

Yea percentage of rent, phone, travel (all travel!), lunches (if you save receipts), taxis... etc
It's great.

also, there's so much information on this on the HMRC site...
this has a list of all allowed and disallowed expenses:
