Seeing Carson over there in the EC made me smile, I'm actually putting together a talk at the minute and wondered who you guys figured to be held up as today's design heroes?
In 98/99 when I was first learning about type and design I was learning about Tomato, Vaughn Oliver, Carson, Brody, Frost and Sagmeister.
Who are today's equivalents 12 years later?
Any thoughts welcome.

Banksy
- he is an artist not a designer.pango
- There are no boundaries when it comes to today's design heroesabettertomorrow
- yes there is! he is an graffiti artist! i hate it when now a day somebody put a graphic on a t shirt they automatically calls them self a designer.pango
- them self a designer.pango

- I still choose Banksy as #1 designerabettertomorrow

I really like Robert Lindstrom's (DesignChapel / NorthKingdom) work.

it's much more studio driven, not so much about individuals anymore... at least on a commercial level..

Have any of these designers listed so far save anything in this world to gain the title of "hero"?
- Not at all, I'm more interested in who student's admire leaving uni/college I guess.wordsarepictures

Btw, I'm just saying I like their work, not heroes...

I'd disagree, about the studio-driven thing; there's so little work going that people are having to set up on their own.
Banksy... meh? Is he a designer? I don't think he'd ever call himself that, or would he? He's more of a social commentator for me.
I'm really wondering who's being held up by tutors on courses. Maybe I need to get in touch with some colleges.
Keep it coming though folks.

I recently visited a school (and remember mine) and Bierut, Scher, Victore(if you consider him a designer) sgmster, are still safe choices. Even Fairey from what I witnessed.

I think it would be interesting to track down the designers (mostly unknown) who came up with all these ideas that we use actually everyday.
Who actually came up with the concept for Wordpress/Blogger or the first browser design? Who are the people who came up with the Apple UI look and feel, or the layouts for Twitter and Google. Its easy to point to design "celebrities" like David Carson or on the web, someone like Joshua Davis, and call them heroes, but how much influence do they really have outside of a small circle of people?

- Substance, not style in other wordsabettertomorrow
- I guess they were just on the lips and in the minds of students when I was studying.wordsarepictures
- Maybe the fact no-one knows these guys is indicitive that there are no more heroes?wordsarepictures
- That's what I was thinking, there are fewer big names than in the early-mid 90sabettertomorrow
- Back then, it was more about ego and being an artist. Today, with digital anyway, much more about business and functionality.abettertomorrow
- creating things people can actually use.abettertomorrow

Can we credit NoPattern for his style then?
- illustrator / image makerneue75_bold
- But if you think of it, every student and even pro designers have done at least one job in which clients have asked for his 'style'OSFA
- 'style'. We've seen it everywhere and he's considered the original. Hope I'm making sense...OSFA
- it makes sense but I just think it's misleading... would you have nopattern design a book?neue75_bold
- exactly, they're one-dimensional. they can make a pretty image with rainbow colorsreinitialize
