May I ask, what do you do to promote your biz/work? Also, how do you go about looking for new clients?
- w_w0
Word of mouth is where most of my work comes from. As for promotion, I promote my portfolio with emails to agencies, old and existing clients, and local creative communities.
Try looking for work on craigslist or other job boards if you run out of client work.

theres no secret sites out there to get work at, or any particular method that guarantees work... it is a really competitive industry... but you will find work if your portfolio is good and you send emails with clear details about your abilities and the kind of work you want

Promotion is not necessarily where it's at – pound the streets and reach out to people directly. Networking and word of mouth will serve you far better in the long run than investing a ton of time trying to sell yourself...

There is a secret site. Only Horp knows it.

First, you've got to decide if you want to work for agencies, as a subcontractor, or from clients directly.

If you want to work for agencies, go around to all the agencies you can find. Show 'em your stuff. If they seem interested, keep in contact with them. Phone 'em every couple of weeks. Don't let them forget you.

i got a deal with some people. they handle sales.. i give em a cut.

If you want to work directly for clients, like doing their websites or design, well, you've got to find businesses that can be talked into hiring you to do that.

All referrals and networking, especially through LinkedIn (I work with ad agencies but have one direct client). Always try to make the current project better than the last too. Working with ad agencies are cool because people jump from agency to agency all the time. Become known to an agency as the 'go-to-guy' and whenever someone jumps ship, it's always a possibility to be the go-to-guy for another agency. The cycle goes on and now you have a solid set of clients and probably even more work than you can handle. A lot of ad agencies pay very well too, so don't think you have to go direct to make serious coin.
Direct clients are cool but it'll be very difficult to get them and maintain them unless you're more than a one man show or know someone directly (I'm talking about big clients, i.e. Fortune 500 etc, not local companies).

As a illustrator, you're suppose to spend 20% of your time promoting your work or getting a good rep who would take on average 25% of your commission but I heard a good rep would normal bring in higher fees.

Anyone know what's a fair referral commission fee these days? Is it still 20% or are we on the 305 already?

Any ideas?
