Btw, I'd suggest a disk image when it's all setup and working so you don't have to feel the pain again.

    • Ha. My obsessive imaging habits made me think the same.

      Good point dude! :)

    Thanks for that link kalkal.

There seem to be many ways to hackintosh. I wonder which is the best / most stable.

    • from my looking around, this seemed like the cleanest method.johnny_wobble

I think iBoot+multibeast is one of the cleanest ways other than just using iBoot and getting all of the kexts and stuff by youself

    • the iboot cd you use is a handy thing to get you into the system if things fuck up too.johnny_wobble

This whole thing could potentially become easier when standard PC motherboards start shipping with EFI instead of BIOS.

It's the biggest real difference between Macs and PCs still, other than the pretty factor.

    @tymeframe
"how much work & effort goes into setting up something like that?"

well first you have to do adequately put together a computer, which can be very daunting, but its quite easy.

The harder part i imagine is getting MAC OSX installed on your system, which from what ive read isnt that difficult as long as you're prepared for somethings not to work right away and spend some time trouble shooting them to get them working.

I expecting installing a hacked OSX would take a maximum 2 days, including all the problems you could face. which to most is worth the money saved as well as the better hardware available for a higher performance machine.

ask johnny wobble how long it took!

If I ever do it, I'd like to mod an old G5 case from ebay to fit an ATX motherboard. I have no idea how to do that though, so I'm not going to.

pretty soon this will be a common hack/build with all the wrinkles will have been ironed out of the process and you'll start seeing these popping up all over the place.

i think this is at the heart of what pc's have been about all along, but people have always associated them with the microsoft OS's and ugly cases, which shouldn't, or at least, doesn't have to be the case (NPI).

    • you're ok with this steve? shouldn't you be resting?johnny_wobble

update. sleep and restart are definitely issues.

waking from sleep causes a reboot. after rebooting, the keyboard and mouse don't work (maybe all usb? not sure). turn it off, then back on and they work again.

same for restart, usb problem after restart. turn it if off then back on and they work again.

shutting down is fine. no usb problem after turning it back on.

I'll mess with getting the sleep working sometime, but for now, I'll just leave the fucker running. No other problems have come up. Got CS5 installed and it runs well for what I need.

^the best thing about apple is being able to copy most CS5 apps directly from the applications folder.

sooo good. just copy from one machine paste to another and they work, all running from a folder, like some portable windows apps. Thats the future! MODULAR!!
