Hey there!
I'm building a PC, just wondering what graphics cards people could recommend for around £100?
Cheers for the help!

Something like that perhaps?I haven't built a pc in years so I'm not all too up to date on it. From what I've heard though ati are generally better than nvidia these days.

How convenient mate!
I've been putting together a pc spec for the last couple of weeks.Basically you want either a nvidia gtx 460 (1 gig preferably, but the 768mb is still a good choice) or the ati 5850.
Now these cards are around the £130 mark but everyone says spending the extra £30 for effectively double the performance is a no brainer. Spending £100 is just not economical.
I'm going for the gtx 460 1gb (@ £130 - the gigabyte manufacturer version)
becuase it's a great card, but also if you get an SLI mother board you can later add another gtx 460 (which will be cheaper in the future) and double your performance. The 460 series are considered the best bang for buck cards. They also overclock very well getting an extra 20-30% performance.
Also the nvidia cards have a feature called CUDA which allows the card to be utilised for general processing rather than just gaming (IIRC).
Also adobe apps seems to favor nvidia in terms of OpenGL and performance.
Hope that helps dude!

Bench marks there^
- 1GB dang. hah. wasn't 256mb like yesterday. ;-)akrok
- Haha, yeah they've gone a bit hardcore. The 768mb one is still great, but the 1gb takes the lead in 1920x1080 gaming.Hombre_Lobo_2
- Which to me seems like crazy res, im used to 1024x768 on cod4 pc!
Full HD would be eye bleedingly sharp!!Hombre_Lobo_2

One thing that threw me, was power consumption. Fast graphics cards are power hungry and require a decent power supply.
- Also - they tend to take up more than one slot.lukus_W
- indeed. at least 2 slots.akrok
- huh huh, you said slots:

Also Antonyjwhite,
it's worth waiting until January 9th, intel are releasing new pocessors that are updates to the current i3 i5 and i7.
The new ones are called 'sandy bridge' and expected to be 20% faster, and should be released at the same price point.
This is assuming your making an intel system :)
- good tip.akrok
- Thanks, I was told this by someone when I mentioned I was building a new comp. Gotta pass it on! :)Hombre_Lobo_2
- ..new chips that combine CPU capabilities and graphics processing in a single package.deathboy
- not sure but that may change up some stuffdeathboy

ah shit, i just bought i5, got all the bits, its just the graphics card i need to complete my desktop. Asus P7H55-M h55 is the motherboard ive got.
- on board graphics on the board... see how well those work for your use if you want to save or weight for a dealdeathboy

so for design and photo editing, and general use, what benefits does a souped up card offer?
They're really all about motion graphics right?

I'm not very fimiliar with it, but you might want to look into CUDA. As far as I know it allows you to use the entire GPU for general processing. I'm not sure if it's an application enabled feature or if it's a global operating system thing.
