Get her to go to any talk at ICP in new york, that would be amazing to hear a good photographer like Phillip Lorca or Taryn SImon talk about their work, also buy her either Gurzky, Ruff or Becker´s book, you will change her life...

^ wide angle is a great idea
I went with a Canon AE-1 with a flash attachment. Seems like a solid camera, electronics so its precise, and a good 'amateur' SLR.
Gonna pick her up some diff types of film, as well, and maybe look into a wide angle converter. Thanks for the help everyone.

Wide angle converter. hands down the most fun toy you can get for her. they range from 15 to 500 so always one to fit yr budget
- oh and they just pop on and off your current lens, so no sitting down to swap lenses, just pop it on topProjectile

dave - read:

to decide between slr and rangefinder (: that page also has lots of stuff on ye olde 70's cameras.

does she currently have a dslr? if so, what brand?
i am asking because i own a lot of canon eos equipment. at the same time i own a lot of old pentax lenses, which fit nicely onto my canons with an adapter plate ($15 on ebay).
if, for example, she has a canon dslr and you buy her an old pentax film slr with some pentax lenses, you can get her the adapter plate and she can enjoy the manual lenses on both systems.

or something like this, bunch of lenses and cases for everything:

If going along the lines of toy cameras, try this. Don't know your budget, but this seems pretty neat.

Teach her how to make her own Camera.
or just print out the instruction and give it to her.
