Aside from being nothing but empty sugars, high fructose corn syrup has been linked to gastrointestinal problems as well. It's not as though corn syrup will harm you much more than any other empty sugar, but a person consuming large amounts of corn syrup is replacing calories that could have been from nutritious fruits and vegetables with a nothing less substitute.
HFCS is banned in UK and about to be in Europe.

"HFCS is banned in UK"
I was surprised when I read this, as we're rarely all that far from the States in terms of food legislation (obvious Euro intervention aside) and, indeed, I don't think I can find mention of this claim anywhere other than in a couple of Green Food Blogs (rarely, sadly, a source of legitimate claims) or Wikipedia (samesame).
You can't buy it on the shelves here, but I don't think it's actually 'banned'. Probably more a lack of popularity amongst consumers when competing against vast numbers of existing industrial food products from our long history of sweet making.
Not defending the shit, mind - I hate the drive of mass food producers to the bottom. my particular bugbear is the swapping of large percentages of natural sugar for artifical sweeteners, then slapping the obligatory "Now contains less sugar!" banner over the front, like it's a benefit for me the consumer, rather then their bottom line.
- 'natural sugar' = 'naturally-derived sugars', sorry.detritus
- no sugar added. now we talking.akrokdesign
- plenty of alcohol, though. lol.akrokdesign

If you really are concerned about your nutrition you'll put your energy towards finding real food to eat. Ice cream in any form is just not going to cut it.

The point for me, is that Ben and Jerry's has always made a big deal about how right-on they are, and how they use good ingredients and are ex-hippies. So this is a bit hypocritical.
- dibec0
absurd. corn syrup is in almost everything. it's cheap and easily mass produced. to convert to "real" sugars is just not economical. it's like asking the whole world to stop using oil. once again it's not economical and will not happen.
hippies and conservationist should continue to smoke their pot and run around naked banging their drums. As stated above most of these agendas are very hypocritical and lobbyist money wasting bs. If you are into this type of bs movement there are plenty of products out there that will meet your needs. Ben & Jerrys is dank because of the corn syrup.
DON'T FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN. COMMIES.
/end rant.
- That point of view is maybe as biased as the opposite though.lukus_W

Wait, it was closed after 94 signatures? I do agree with the below though:
Many loyal consumers of Ben & Jerry's ice cream have conscientiously purchased these products to the exclusion of others because of opposition to the use of rGBH, rBST, and antibiotics in dairy products. Even more importantly, we support Ben & Jerry's in the fight against Monsanto's bullying tactics to restrict labeling of their products. It is inconsistent with the politically aware policies of Ben & Jerry's that corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup is being used in their products, and we ask that Ben & Jerry's replace these ingredients with healthier, more agriculturally sustainable alternatives.

hfcs is artificially cheap because of government corn subsidies.

check out this amazing shirt!

Isn't it that ice cream, by definition, is made with heavy cream & saturated fat to begin with? wouldn't that completely diminish the potential health problems caused by corn syrup?I mean, is incredibly high in sugar and fat, right?

Wouldn't it be the equivalent of asking to sing a petition to remove butter from the KFC Double Down™ 1228 (cal) Sandwich?

They're just another big company running a business. I guarantee there are some local places around you who keep it reel. You can't throw a stone in NY without hitting 4 or 5 within a few blocks who use grass fed organic dairy and organic sugar. Support those folks.

That Americone Dream is the best ice-cream flavor I've every tasted in my entire life.
It's like rocky road, but with less chocolate and more cone. Truly amazing.
By the way, I rather have corn syrup, then corn made into Ethanol fuel. Take that HIPPIES!- "than" sorry.SoulFly
- pour some in your car and drive on it. hahha.akrokdesign

If you're worried about the HCFS in one cup of ice-cream being more harmful than its large amounts of saturated fat and high calories (more than a cheeseburger) then you're just dumb.
basically what Miguex said.
