no - a mate has a site on EE but wants to move it to wordpress for the plugins/community around WP.
he has a forum built in EE though, and that's the real problem.

EE is probably a good step after Wordpress. Knowing some basic PHP helps.

client request to use Wordpress over EE?

I think the way I did it was to look at the XML format Wordpress accepts, and then write an Expression Engine template that outputs an XML file in exactly that format.
There may also be a utility (plug in) for EE that outputs the XML directly, but this approach should be just as easy. Of course this covers posts and comments only, so depending on how complex your site is there may be more effort required.

You can't convert the database directly. Best bet is probably to export the data as XML, and then import into Wordpress.
