And I want to build it myself. The last time I did this there was a thing called Flash that all the kids liked, iframes were cool to hate, and Web 2.0 was still Web 1.3 Alpha. But seriously I haven't done any serious work for the web in 8 or 9 years, and what I had done was pretty basic.
I want one of these "blogs" I've heard so much about, something I can update myself, post new work (I know portfolio sites are SO self-indulgent, but what's the harm?), etc. The easier the better, but I don't want some generic Blogger or Wordpress template, you know? Where do I start?

find a freelancer and get a quote.

design your site and send me the comps. I will port it to wordpress and charge you an exorbitant fee.

Install Wordpress in your site. Try it out. See if you like the work flow.
Get some idea on what you want to do / design etc.
Have a designer design one for wordpress or other blog platform
Have a developer make a theme.
thats it.
- What does have a developer make a theme mean?VikingKingEleven
- theme for wordpress or anything light CMS platform.JSK

You can use blog platform but not look like a blog. Using blog platform only as a publishing tool.

Or just use Carg0 Collective
Have a design done and get someone to adjust it for the design.

Personally, I'd do the first upload in plain 'modern' HTML, getting yourself reäcquainted with CSS and whatnot, then update manually for a while, experimenting with how you'd like your blog to actually work.. and after that, add in some kind of blogware or cms.
http://www.wolfcms.org/ and the like are worth looking in to, imo.
- < hasn't made a website since late '97. WHERE DID YOU GO, NETOBJECTS FUSION?!detritus

Core cmsthey are all simple layouts, just add the content!
In fact stacey is different, more complicated and code savvy.

try virb, it is a website builder now and getting really good.
otherwise nothing beats a wordpress site with a customized theme on an inexpensive server of your own choosing.

ftr, plenty of things beat wordpress for content management. they may not be free but worth every dollar
anyone suggest supersimple.org yet?
todd's a good guy who can build what you need, cosmoo, if he's around anymore was also quite renowned by his peers i remember

What's a reasonable price range for converting to a CMS based on comps?
- honestIy0
cms based on comps would require both front and backend comps as well as an understanding of the contents to be hosted be it pulling data from other sites ie youtube vimeo flickr etc. it all comes down to the upload class(es) and how many are needed i'd assume. there are also server side apps that could run simultaneously that could crop resize images on the fly reducing the effort needed to upload content while staying within the style guidelines of said comps
