Spartacus was a hero, the other slaves were demonstrating their support and preventing him from being discovered, there is no similarity to this tosser who published a threat online.
The police are OBLIGED to investigate, a prosecution was appropriate. This campaign is just a bunch of other self-regarding tossers who think tweeting is making a serious point.

it would be nice if this pursuit of justice was more about catching bombers than about preemptive this or that.

‘My first thought upon hearing it was the police was that perhaps a member of my family had been in an accident,’ 26-year-old Mr Chambers told The Independent.
“‘Then they said I was being arrested under the Terrorism Act and produced a piece of paper. It was a print-out of my Twitter page. That was when it dawned on me.’”
While being questioned on suspicion of conspiring to create a bomb hoax at the police station, Chambers had to explain to the police department what Twitter was and how it worked.

Maybe the government and courts needed to establish a precedent and this 26 yo dude was the perfect victim to use without eliciting some grand media controversy. Most of me thinks this is way wrong but a small part of me thinks man, you can't mess around with those type of comments anymore, even in jest - so idk.

Is a message more "serious" depending on the media it's served on?
While this may seem like (a) clueless old fart(s) of a police ensemble who should know on what basis they are basing the arrest on:
"Chambers had to explain to the police department what Twitter was and how it worked"
Put it in another context. Say, Chambers was an Arab and instead of twitter he put the same message in a video put on the web for everyone to see.
- ps. if you get angry I put Arab in there I think I've proven another point. Try replacing "media" with something else.Peter
