Warners greenlights 'Akira'; Hedlund front-runner
http://www.variety.com/article/V…Variety reports that Warner Bros. green-lit the film. With that, everything becomes solid; including the casting. "Both Warners and Collett-Sera have been keen on [Garrett Hedlund to star], but had to wait for a greenlight to make their move," they write. So, just think on this for a moment. Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn in "Tron Legacy" as Kaneda ... er, "Kendall." I guess that means we can expect Channing Tatum to show up as Tetsuo -- I mean "Tommy."

fooler says: aren't you guys a little old to be watching cartoons?
Because its been drawn, we can't look?
At what age does it become unseemly to look at films that were drawn as opposed to, say, films where people put on costumes, and wear lots of make up?

Damn:) The director drops out of the project too...

Barely one week after the departure of Keanu Reeves — purportedly due to fan outcry surrounding the actor’s casting as Kaneda — today comes word that the Warner Bros’ project has also lost director Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli). Hughes may not have been a popular choice in some quarters, but his departure casts some doubt on the future of the troubled production.

If you've been in the "anti" crowd with regards to the status of Hollywood's live-action adaptation of Akira, you may have reason to celebrate. Keanu Reeves has reportedly passed on playing the role of Kaneda, making him the third prospective lead (after Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling) to drop the project.
And there's more bad news for the "pro" faction, as Warner Brothers has dissolved the "previsualization" department assigned to developing Akira as a franchise. While WB has yet to formally confirm that the film has been axed, it's still a pretty heavy blow.

Keanu Reeves to Star in Akira?
Keanu Reeves may be getting ready to take a trip to New Manhattan, the setting for the American, live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga, Akira. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, claiming Reeves has been meeting with Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures and, while there's no offer, the Matrix star seems to be the current frontrunner for the lead.
To be directed by Albert Hughes, Akira was famously adapted as an anime film in 1988. Reeves would potentially play the role of Kaneda, a member of a biker gang in a cyberpunk dystopia.
Reeves will next appear in 47 Ronin, hitting theaters on November 21, 2012. He also recently revealed that he will return for a third Bill & Ted film at some point in the not-too-distant future.

You have to hand it to the director, that is the worst list anyone could have imagined.
Michael Fassbender playing a teenager? Justin Timberlake? Joaquin Phoenix? So fat he'd fall off the bike.
