Unless you're after particularly illustrative examples, try sticking 'GIS' into your search term ("GIS map cartographic design", say)—I found someone here in Blighty years ago this way.

a schematic map ala London Underground or an accurate geographic map ala an atlas?

they want an accurate map combined with an infographic to scale.

if it's more leaning toward an infographic, hire a graphic artist or illustrator,
if it's more leaning toward a technical diagram, hire a GIS tech.
if it's all about exploring uncharted lands and turning surveys and aerial photos into topographic maps, hire a cartographer.I suspect you need a graphic artist or illustrator. Good base-maps can often be got on government websites.
