So I've been reading some articles online on sending cold job inquiries to companies and many suggest mailing your resume and intro letter rather than emailing. But my impression of most design agencies is that they would find snail mail old fashioned and would be more likely to respond to emails with links to portfolio etc. What do other people out there do? Mail or email?

Do both, except when a company explicitly demands one or the other.

The best way to get attention when job-seeking is to visit the place in person. If they don't have time to see you right then, then leave a resume behind. Follow that up with a phone call to schedule an appointment.
- Have you done this before? I haven't, but I'd imagine showing up in person without making an appointment can be kind of off-puttingmcmillions

getting real mail that isn't a bill or a k-mart flyer is awesome.

we actually hired a programmer that walked in just to introduce himself one time. Face to face works.
