you'll have to pledge allegiance to the Queen of Canada, I hope you're comfortable with that.

Actually....
I've been thinking about this for a little while now. I live in Michigan literally across the river from Ontario - Sarnia is 1/2 hr away and toronto is about 2.5-3hrs. Would be great to get some insight as to what's available in Ontario, how wages and taxation works and the process required for a work visa.

i received an "informal" job opp. a few days ago. pretty much just need to get up there to make it happen. employer is willing to help with the necessary steps but was just wondering how long the process can/usually takes? might not be something i want to pursue if i have to wait 10 months.

ETM,
something i wouldn't mind doing. especially since season is just around the corner. there's just something about waiting for a job, while hoping the employer waits for me, then hoping the feelings are still mutual.. pretty risky future. just trying to find the quickest and closest to guaranteed route.

As far as I know all you'd need to do is show up at the border with your passport, school papers, possibly a bank statement and of course a letter of employment.
Shouldn't take more than 15 mins if you are clean.
i went through the same thing and it was quick.

You can get a one year work Visa. Usually takes about 3-6months to process. Or if you get offered a job you have to be sponsored in, which can take much longer (6-12 months). Also depends on the province you apply to. Different jobs carry different weights... for example if you are a doctor you'll be in asap but if you wait tables in New Jersey you'll be waiting a while. If an employer want to sponsor you in, they have to advertise it to the Canadian public and do interviews etc to prove no Canadian is qualified to do the job, then they can "import" you. It costs them about 5K so you must lay golden eggs or something. If you marry a Canadian it can still take up to a year to get your Visa (permanent residency). However I have seen guys basically talk their way over the border with no real paper work, just a few lawyers letters.
The fastest way into Canada right now is to apply to Alberta and work on the Oil Sands. You can get processed in 4months max. But you'll be destroying the environment and working with lots of dirty smelly men.

American and Canadian graphic designers can work in each other's countries very easily. You need what's called a TN visa which involves having a diploma in graphic design, 3 years experience, and a letter from your future employer. google tn visa for more info.

I got the TN visa and like I mentioned it only took me 15 mins at the border. It's valid a year but in can be renewed. I worked in canada with the TN visa for 3 years and renewed it twice.
