I'm looking for a free alternative to Time Machine, any suggestions?
It can't be a coincidence that both of my external drives failed whatever prep work TM initiates before backing up, within minutes of each other. One is a Seagate, one a Western Digital, so it can't be a hardware thing even if it wasn't a coincidence. Each has a partition for TM and a regular file partition where I can toss files to get them off the main HD without worrying about TM eventually deleting them from the overall backup scheme. Both regular partitions are fine — I can access them like normal. Now I have to juggle the contents of three drives to reformat two of them...

Have you tried Applecare?

I just use rsync, which is already installed on your mac. it's not for the command line phobic though.

Couldn't it be something to do with your computer's set-up or interface? Your time machine software and the drives aren't the only players in your mystery.
Check the system logs to see if you have any errors / warning messages fire off at the time the backup goes wrong.

ribit - I'm a few years out of whatever warranty I had.
acescence - Apparently there's rsyncx now, with a GUI. I ain't afeared o' no command lines, but clicking a button beats typing. I'll check it out tonight.
lukus_W - Entirely possible, but wouldn't I be having problems on my internal hard drive? I've set everything up in accordance with every source I could find on the subject.
