"put full white lumas in the alpha channel (unchecked all other channels) with no spec and cranked the brightness and contrast, inverted like you would the shadowcatcher plugin and away we go! (So, remind me why the shadowcatcher needs to exist?)" from a post on mograph

btw i just finished a project using c4d and shadow catcher extensively.
have you tried the composite tag (seen by camera / accept shadows tick boxes)? people suggest this for the same purposes as shadow catcher, but i couldn't get it working.
i do love c4d, but find it bizarre how this functionality isn't built, and a plug-in install is necessary.
- I could never get this working either. I always just did 2 renders.DoTheMacarena
- Or actually, I think it wouldn't work with a floor plane, but would with a plane primitive.DoTheMacarena
- i found that too dude!
i had to use just planes, no floors or skies!Hombre_Lobo

I'm going to try this shadow catcher tonight. Great find.
The composite tag works, it's just a crazy work around with mutipass renders of each frame just to get a shadow. Then there is production involved to select the alpha and extract it in PS, easier in AFX of course. For some reason, getting a shadow casted onto a floor/plane and hiding it from the camera also hides the shadow. A shadow catcher should be stock in C4D material/alphas, but still isn't. I know it's straight forward and available in max/maya.

yeah you can do all this with a multipass render to AE. probably works better to be honest but for quick and dirty, shadow catcher or the right combo of composite tags will get you there.

Oh btw, R12 is available for anyone looking to upgrade at work. I heard the advanced physics modules have been dramatically enhanced for animation purposes.

Anyone know if this is fixed in R12? I've seen some demos on the improved physics which look awesome, but I haven't heard anything about render module changes.

r12? what is it!
let me check
