still white?
You may need to duplicate the layer and merge the two in order for other programs to recognize the transparency.
now that is is flat, adjust lightness/darkness on it now that you have the transparency.

do you have to place this into a darker background now? i.e. edges pixelate on you?

Copy the image on white and paste it as a channel. Fill the areas of the object that you want to keep with black. Invert it then select it, and repaint it.
I'm rubbish at explaining myself. If it's not too sensitive an image, feel free to email me and I'll do it for you and send you back a png.

Select Colour Range... just white, drop the fuzziness down to just enough, then deselect any white in the object.
Hit delete.

in photoshop, double click on the layer to bring up the layer style menu. At the bottom ...Blend if (grey)....this layer. Option click on the arrow and drag to separate it into two parts and move to the center

yeah, thought that might be the case... it is in three parts as it is to dynamically add to images on a site... oh well...
you'd think there was a simple way

Woah, thanks Rusty ace, that seems to be working :)
I only use cut, paste, crop, image size, canvas size, auto levels, and export for web... photoshop is very wasted on me
