East Hastings has a worse rep than Jane & Finch.

So after our visit last Oct, me and my girlfriend decided on moving to Vancouver for a year. We move out there next Sunday, We are staying out in Surrey for a month, but then we are going to have to find a place to live and work and I was wondering if you guys could recommend any decent areas to go apartment hunting? we have been looking around the interwebs at them but because we don't know any of the areas especially well I thought someone might be able to give us a few ideas?

Toronto
East of Young in downtown at night.
Scarborough (parts of it)
Jane & Finch
RexdaleThe difference is that while downtown East Hastings is a scene of junkies, chances you getting mugged is quite low because of police on every corner.
- police on every corner!?! you clearly have been for a long timecallitropsis
- Gone for a long time?JSK
- ya yacallitropsis
- I was there 2 years ago.JSK
- Queen and Church ain't great, but it pails in comparison to EH.Andrew_D

For the record, Vancouver is f*cking amazing place. I just never thought I'd see an area like that there. Also, I've lived in sketchy areas of London and NYC and EH is far, far worse (or at least condenced) than any where there.
As a caveat, I had just been in the New Amsterdam Cafe when i walked down there...

Leslieville / Queen E.
I remember having to jumping over 3 junkies outside friends apartment because they refused to move from the front doors.
- When the fuck were you last in Toronto? Average house in that hood goes for $500,000+.Andrew_D
- I was in Toronto 4 years ago. That strip club still there? 90% of the woman are over 35 and have some sort of scars?JSK
- Haha...Jilly's! Yup, it's the only thing left, they're redeveloped the shit outta that area.Andrew_D
- Good times... Jilly's. Only place where you see mother daughter strippers.JSK
- Indeed, I went there before a show at the Opera House when I was 18. They let me in using my own ID, was awesome.Andrew_D

East Hastings is prob the worst looking neighborhood.
You got junkies and homeless folks all over the street but hardly any violence.

There is a really good deli on East Hastings by Carrall and Columbia.
Also a amazing Malaysian curry place by Cordova.

if you want to be downtown but away from yuppies... west end is great. you have the beach, park and a nice walk to the downtown core.
if you want to live across the bridge, check out kitsilano, jericho
- Went to a party at Grey Pt love the house along the shore.sebastianfrench

Lots of cliquey neighbourhoods in Vancouver. Please provide details about yourself (food, music, fit of jeans) and we will place you accordingly.

dear lord, don't stay in surrey.
Main Street & Broadway is a great area.
Cambie & Broadway is another fantastic neighborhood.
While Commercial Drive may have some appeal, it's been getting shadier and shadier every year.

Have not got a job sorted yet but I have been contacting agencies, we have been looking into Kitsilano & main Street area, our budget is about $1200, jobs permitting

go for a sunny stroll around the stanley park seawall, grab a 3k calorie burger at vera's (at denman 'n davie) and enjoy it on a park bench whilst watching the wind and orcas putting on a good show for you with the oceans.
