So, did we reach consensus on which iPad ripoff is the best?

  • BillGates0

Ok, I took a week to test the archos 101.
here's my short review for those interrested in getting one.
    btw I have the Archos 101 8gb.

    pros:
    - Price, price and price, I paid €300 for it, which is nothing for all the shit you get
    - plug and PLAY!! FFS,
I got it, turned it on, took 2 min to do the setup and I was accessing my home network without having install a single fuckn program. I was actually amazed that I could watch my movies, read my comics, transfer files without wasting any time.
using it with my external hdd's worked without any setup,
mouting it on mac or pc displays the tablet as an external drive, you just drop whatever you want in any folder, unplug it, it works,
    fuck itunes.
    - this tablet is amazingly light, commuting with it and holding it with one hand is not tiring at all, I use it on the train and subway and people look at me because I'm cool and modern.
    - sound quality of the speakers (stereo),
I wanted to walk the streets holding it like a boombox
    - no crashes yet.
but some programs won't run well on it because of the screen size
    - battery life is decent I get roughly 10 to 11 hours of browsing, reading, listening to music (I don't play video games so it may be shorter when you use CPU intensive games)
    - very responsive capacitive screen, no problem getting the hang of it, sometimes it is too sensitive though, no lag and no dead pixels
    - video playback is smooth, watching movies on my network didn't lag at all (-1 apparently you can't rotate while you watch one, maybe you can but I haven't found it yet)

    cons:
    - The screen is too damm shiny, I had to get an ipad antiglare and cut it so I won't constantly look at myself while I read. forget about using it outside in full sunlight (ipad screen +1)
    - Angle of vision is shitty, too be honest the antiglare solved it a bit
    - weight, it is too light, it scares me
    - camera?? What camera, they could have left it out, very very shitty vga one
    - android market- you'll need a special apk to access it, but it works fine once you installed it

    verdict: 4 stars,
Archos got a game changer there, but their PR department is ruining it, there is no fuckn advertising about it and it is pretty fuckn hard getting your hands on one.
I hope next year they'll upgrade it to a tegra processor.
btw: I'm still running 2.1, I heard bad reviews about the froyo update so I'll let other test it and bitch about quirky problems till they fix every froyo bugs. why won't people understand that you never jump on the first update.

    haven't tested:
Tether - my better half got a 3g and I got a nokia that did desert's storm, so no tethering for me
hdmi output, don't have a tv

It is def not an ipad, but it is a pretty solid tablet nonetheless,
hombre, chrismas was hectic at work, haven't had the time to respond, except trolling qbn eheehh

    • that sounds hot. i went with cowon over archos on pmp before because archos was selling codecsdeathboy
    • but that does look gooddeathboy

Market research firm Forrester isn’t putting too much stock in the hype surrounding upcoming Android 3.0 tablets. Instead, the company believes that Amazon is best suited to take on the iPad when it decides to enter the tablet arena.

What’s the problem with Android slates like Motorola’s recently released Xoom? Forrester considers them all too expensive, and they also can’t match the Apple Store’s retail experience. Forrester has found that consumers also find Apple’s products more valuable because of the company’s slick retail stores. Forrester predicted last week that the iPad 2 will continue to dominate in 2011 with 80 percent of the tablet market.

An Amazon tablet (which would likely run Android), on the other hand, could better compete with the iPad 2 in terms of pricing, and it could also take on Apple’s content offerings and retail advantage. Unlike other tablet manufacturers, Amazon could deliver a tablet at or below cost, with the hopes that it would recoup some of that expense from ebook sales. That’s not too different from how Amazon first approached its megapopular Kindle e-reader.

Interesting. Amazon does have the clout and the success of the Kindle makes that idea very interesting.

Marking - that's another thing the Xoom is dead on. Apple has slick, sophisticated ads that speak to a wide market, from kids to teachers to casual users.

Xoom shows some dumb dude in a alien pod! Jesus! Could you get a more pathetic, generic marketing campaign?!

Really, I was interested before but the introduction is so pathetic I am pretty much convinced it will fail, completely. Sad.

Fire that company now! For some reason, I think of something like a shaving commercial. Stupid stupid stupid.

Can't anyone just copy Apple already?!

    • The commercials make me chuckle too. They're so bad. Just show me the product and tell me about it.dMullins
    • My tablet doesn't transform me into a ship pilot from the future.dMullins
    • Clearly, that's what we all want - pod ships and bad 3D graphics. Go Motorola.
      (first ads were ok, though)

    • just imagine if Apple advertised like that how much shit they would getmonospaced

BTW, did you realize the Motorola tablet (with Honeycomb) launched without Flash? Apparently Adobe is still working on getting Flash to work on the new Android tablet OS.

    http://www.slashgear.com/missing…

    • The important thing to remember is that it will actually get flash.
And pretty soon going by googles update speed.

    • Googles update speed.

Though it is strange how it didn't ship with it.
      Hombre_Lobo
    • and some asshole said I didn't know shit about Flash when I said it was up to Adobe to make it workmonospaced
    • and why it makes sense it's not on the iPadmonospaced
  • Boz0

It didn't ship with Flash because they need Flash 10.2 with StageVideo on it.. and the new Flash player support GPU.. my guess is something to do with Tegra 2.

Either way, today Xoom got the system update to enable Flash 10.2 so it's coming in the new few days.

Hmmm, I heard "spring 2011"....either way, it's over 1 year after the initial iPad release. At the time people gave Apple shit for "blocking" Flash.

No doubt they are blocking it now, or at least not working on it, but am I the only one who sees a slight irony here? Obviously getting Flash to work on these low performance devices is no walk in the park. I wonder what would have happened if Apple had tried to accomodate Adobe.

    • You can't moan about a brand new tablet not having flash saying 'its a year since the intial ipad release'. When other tablets have it.Hombre_Lobo
    • ...tablets have flash working absolutely fine. It's a brand new OS.Hombre_Lobo
    • Exactly.. Flash 10.1 has been working for a while now just fine on Android devices since 2.1Boz
