What's the purpose anymore?

It seems like the search engines just skip right over them now.

adding ignorable information and http-equiv is useful.

Some low rent search engines still use them all.
Google still uses the description tag, just not the keyword tag.

You want to include the description tag, because if there isn't one, Google often pulls the DMOZ one, which is always crap. Their editors always throw out what you submit for the most generic ones ever."Provides info on services and contact information"

sometimes the description doesn't even come up. Too many factors involved.

Some value in them when sending the bill to your clients. Otherwise title and url are the important ones for google.

Also just do it because when your client has a dinner party with that web expert who points out the site doesn't have the tags, regardless of whether tags do anything, the ensuing phone call to you will not be fun.

adding them to sites stops your competition contacting your client and saynig "did you know your website doesnt even have meta tags" which is the best reason to include them and make them "properly2 formatted and unique.
