Try zapping your PRAM
1. Restart your computer while holding down the keys Command+Option+P+R.
2. Wait for your computer to chime twice before releasing the keys.
The screen will flash when the PRAM resets.
OR,
try safe mode (for some reason it's worked for me before):
hold shift down while booting

Find another mac and connect with firewire. Startup in target mode. Use OS X Disk Utility to run First Aid on busted drive.
Always have an alternate startup disc no matter where you go. Can be the OSX DVD, an external drive w/ install, emergency partition...

little update:
- put HD in external case
- disk warrior was unable to repair HD
- but i was able to copy important data
- i partition the HD and i am trying to put some data back (or buy another HD)

Try target disc mode if you have another mac (and a firewire cable?), this will let you get stuff off the disc. But given the description it may not boot into target disc mode

This has been happening to me for about a week now on my iMac as well. I am thinking I will probably just need to get a new internal HD. Whats a good spot to get those ?
