I had a Nikon D5000, a Nikon 35mm f1.8, a Nikon 24-85 f2.8-4 and an SB-800 flash stolen last week in Montreal.
Should've bought insurance. If anyone sees this stuff for sale suspiciously, let me know. :(

I wanted to but aside from being expensive, it does specify what it covers. I dont want them to say no if I drop it or lose it during travelling.

probably cheapest to get an add-on to an existing insurance policy, so yeah, go through your home insurance.

I want a personal coverage, should I go through my home insurance? I always find those wording quite shady. Or should I get something thats separate.

i should add that iirc my biz. insurance comes with $1M liability coverage also.

Back when I was a commercial photographer, I insured my equipment under an "inland marine" policy. Homeowners policies generally won't cover your equipment if you use it for commercial purposes.

i have a business insurance policy for my photo studio - it's basically the same as renter's insurance. i asked my agent about gear coverage outside the studio, and she said she'd build it in. so i am not sure if i have "photographer's insurance" per se. i think i have some sort of hybrid-monster business insurance that happens to cover my equipment as well.
it costs me slightly over $500/year - not too bad, considering that it covers maybe $10k of equipment. i got it through american family insurance - the same agent covers my car insurance and my renter's insurance, so she might be treating me as a special case, rather than as just one of many photographers getting the same sort of photography insurance.
- oh yes the policy covers my 1000 sq. ft. photo studio as well (: which is why it is more $ than MHDC's policybigtrick

State Farm has a good personal articles policy. I got it for my leicas and lenses. My M8 went on the fritz the past winter and they covered the costs ($1500). For the year the insurance cost me about $140. They dropped me immediately after.

Most sites just list it as an addition to homeowner's insurance. BUT my question is, is there any type of insurance that would cover you if you go on a trip and your camera falls in the water, gets stolen while doing night photography, etc?
- Inland Marine coverage.

Coverage for liability or gear?
Photographers Liability Insurance is often required for when you reserve a city park with a pricey permit, and/or work in a building that requires such things... you often have to have your agent fax a form to the building owner,etc...
Gear Insurance can help with rental at some places so you don't have to use a credit card for deposit....
APA and ASMP have member discounts with various insurers last I heard.. I use an agent referred by a friend....

I rented a lens one time and they asked me if i had insurance that I could use, so i started doing some research on it but only find online companies...

so big, where do you get it? How? What's the typical coverage? etc?
