Transparent Sidebars

I've seen this done on a couple of sites, none of which are coming to mind right now.
It's basically a graphic in the sidebar outside of the content area of a site and when you scroll, the transparency of the graphic changes what's going on. One example was on a robots vs. ninjas site or something. Another I saw was on a porn site or something.
