As safe as anywhere where there are millions of tourists and have been for the last forty years. Apart from the last year when Bangkok turned into a war zone.
Places like that are usually really safe, as they're so dependent on tourism.
Don't do drugs too openly, as if you get caught you are FUCKED.
And scooters. Wear a helmet if you're riding around. Traffic is mental.

3 out of 5, that's the rate.

It's really safe bro.
I would say Thailand is for example about 30 times safer than Brazil. And a LOT safer than Indonesia.
- True. Especially tourists. Since we spend a lot of money there. They live simple lives. It is a hub for buddhism and budo.74LEO

i've spent quite a bit of time in thailand over the last 5 yrs. got malaria first time i went and took a long time to get right.
i have an aunt that lives right in the "war zone" in a 5 star apartment complex. she's still there and feels safe enough.
stay away from the massage parlors. stay away from people that look like beautiful women. enjoy the fruit and the fried rice.
also, i'm currently deaf- drs think it's from a parasite infection from spending too much time in the jungle. been 3 months since i've heard anything at all. they're working on treating it, but cant promise that my hearing will return. so, watch out for that.

I lived in India a while ago, and before I went I heard lots of scary stories, but when I asked "did this happen to you, or did somebody tell you this story" it was the latter almost always.... I was fine..... and I went to Thailand too, was pretty safe for me.... but then again, I live on the south side of Chicago and take the CTA red line almost daily....,so I'm used to looking around

Always double-bag it and make sure they haven't got a cock before you hand over any money...

Oh yeah, my mum said that a guy she knows who edits wedding videos, well his son is in prison for years and they are struggling to get him out.
Apparently he was in a taxi and wanted to get some money exchanged. The taxi driver took him to some counterfeiters and he got a bunch of fake Thai currency in exchange for UK ones - unbeknwonst to him.
When he tried to spend the fake money, he got arrested and now is in prison and seems helpless.

Watch out for malaria south of Bangkok. They say there is none but I have another story.

If a well dressed friendly guy comes up to you and claims that he's from the tourist bureau or some such thing and writes something on a map and tells you if find a tuk-tuk with a white license plate, he'll take you to some special temples or some shit, don't believe him.
I read about the scam in one of the guide books and didn't really think anything of it, until this guy actually gave us a map and the story... any way, we walked to one of the temples he marked on the map and it was under renovation.
When we were in the south we met two people who had their rooms broken into - while they were in them. Both stayed on Khao San Road so I would not recommend staying there.
As far as safety goes - I walked through some fairly dodgy parts of bangkok and nothing happened - not to say it wasn't a bit scary, seeing the same guy three times as I was walking randomly was a little odd, but nothing happened.
If you don;t have a set itinerary I highly recommend Kanchanaburi - that was by far the best, friendliest, most relaxing place we visited. Just get somce scooters and drive around in the countryside / jungles. Super friendly people and amazing landscapes.
