Doing a poster at the moment. Anybody got any suggestions or preferences to mix up a lovely 4-colour black?. Want a clear none muddy black.
Anybody got any good values?

What are you printing it on? I've used 50 50 50 100 before with success, but it's a risky combination if it goes wrong...

C 40
M 15
Y 12
K 100make sure you film at least @ 175 LPI
and still your printer will hate you for the thin white lines...- That sounds about right - nice and balanced I would think with the Cyan value / Less yellow = good********

is this for the background black or the black in the graphic?
- all over I will mix a full version for the darker bit's then go for 90% of that on the BG layer********
- mate, maybe i'm not getting you right, but if plan on using a half tone of that composite it will look shite.maikel
- going 90% of a 4 color black is going to show a lot of your other colors... best advise i've seen is to ask the printer.bjladams

Ask the printer.

Totally depends on the other colors in the artwork. Do you want it more green, blue or red-ish?
"This looks good on screen - balanced". You'll need to calibrate your screen very well, plus have your cm-setup perfectly done to proof blacks on screen.
- More neutral less yellow anything but yellow. I know adding other values to your black creates a nice sturdy black just got to get it right.********

I always do 100/40/20/20, but I don't know why

I always do 65/65/65/100 but now that seems like too much ink

Just spotted this on the wiki definition for the term 'Rich Blacks' :) funny
This article is about the ink mixture created by combining black and some other color. For wealthy individuals with some degree of black African ancestry, see black billionaires.

Best check with your printer, they'll know which breakdown will work best on the stock surely?

Im going to get some test proofs done - then save those values for future

Check with your printer if you're getting it Litho'd. My printers always say C=30 M=30 Y=20 K=100 but guess every printer might say slightly different failing that, ask for a double-hit of 100% black, that always looks super punchy!

If I were you, I'd forget about trying to make the overall black a deep rich four colour black as this will kill a lot of the subtleties in the darker near-black greys unless you doa really good job of repro'ing those to be different.
Why not print four colour black, then overprint a a second plate of black as a solid, with a cut-out where the action is.
