Virtual DJ, does look great, but it's an the expensive end of the price tag @ $299. Fine if you are a Pro and need it as a tool for work, I'm sure worth the investment.
But is there any software out there, more for the Home/Personal Use, that ticks all boxes still, Price, Usability, Efficient.

Ableton.

Native Instruments Traktor

...also traktor has a few bits and bobs you can control from.
as I use serato, I cant say ive tried any.

I used to use Mixxx (http://www.mixxx.org) because of compatability with Serato control CD's/vinyl. Sadly it doesn't have loads of fancy beat tracking and track sectioning stuff but it does the job if you can mix anyway. If you want a software 'crutch' then it's gonna be more.

Serato itch is the BEST

thanks for the tips, any recommendations for software free or a liitle cheaper, as this is just for personal, not pro use. B-)

Personally, I'd go for Ableton. It's not as conducive to mixing live, but from the sounds of it you don't want to spend much on software let alone turntables and a mixer.
The low end version of Ableton Live is just $99, and you can demo the product for 30 days without paying. Well worth the $
Plus, you can hook it up to a MIDI controller like this one that I have

Another controller
- got this, it's pretty fun.prophet

http://www.djay-software.com/ very simple itunes based dj software...

For simple stuff get 'Virtual DJ' lets you mix in tracks easily and seamlessly, can also hook this up to your CDJ's and Mixer down the track if you want to invest in some hardware.
Was voted the best mixing software at the Winter Music Conference this year and is really easy to pick up. Also, can get add-ons etc that will let you do more complicated stuff down the track.
Highly recommended.

How hard would it be to write a program like this anyway?

Bump (and hijack).
I'm buying a mac book pro for my girlf' birthday. She DJ's and wants to go digital instead of carrying her vinyl around with her. She's mentioned the software SERATO in conversation before. Is this the best to use as she still wants to mix on decks.
I don't want to ask her as it's a surprise.- yes.spifflink
- Yeah Serato is best for that, FinalScratch the other option there.ukit
- I love my serato! But now I have too much music and it gets hard to narrow it down.Frosty_spl
