    Hey QBN

Ive noticed a couple of kung fu movie threads and thought id let you all know about a really good kung fu club in new york i went to for a session a couple of years ago whilst visiting new york. I studied the style in the UK for 2 years, then visited NY and thought id visit the club.

    The club -
    http://www.northernmantis.com/
The club is run by Sifu Tony Chuy. The Kung Fu style is Seven Star Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Its located right near time square.

    The Style -
The Northern Praying Mantis Kung fu style was the last kung fu style created by the shaolin monks and because of this most say its the most intelligent, effective and refined kung fu styles.

Its a great style, very applicable to general self defense and most importantly like most kung fu styles its a very safe intelligent style, minimizing exposure to attacks.

Just thought id let you New York Kung Fu nuts know about a great school in your own city!

    Hope you are all good!

Ahh some wing chun practitioners on QBN! i thought there would be, its one of the more popular styles.

After speaking with a few wing chun students i found there are many similar hand applications between wing chun and 7 star northern mantis, as is often the case with kung fu you see cross overs occasionally.

    • may look similar but the idea behind the techniques is very different.dirtydesign

^ seriously though. There is no style better than any other. It is the focus, skill and dedication of the artist that makes them great.

    Enjoy your training guys.

    Rei. (respect)

    • there are definitely some styles better than others. I made up a style myself, and its shit.set1/2

    Totally agreed amicus.
I first though you were saying there is no better style than karate. and i was about to write similar to what you said! :P

Styles are just different from other styles, you need to find the one which works best for you and have fun!

I do really like the focus on powerful striking of karate though.

Last night at training an instructor was telling me about a friend of his who was a really good karate practitioner who then did boxing, and later entered boxing tournaments and did very very well.

Thats a dangerous combination, karate striking then learning boxing!

i did shaolin too (tiger dragon style).
Was too fancy tho, kinda wasted 6yrs of my life and wish id done something like krav maga

    • i did krav for 2 years, then switched to wing chun. better body mechanics in my opinion.dirtydesign1/4
I had a similar experience, raw styles such as krav and muay thai are much more effective in a real fight.set2/4
kung fu etc are wonderful ways of getting to know your body and revitalising it etc, though.set3/4
exactly set. kung fu was ace for fitness and flexibility. but krav and JKD are more realisticWeLoveNoise4/4

@WeLoveNoise - "Was too fancy tho, kinda wasted 6yrs of my life"
I totally see what your saying dude. With kung fu, there are so many styles you get some more performance / showy (wushu) styles that arent really good combat styles.

The other main problem with kung fu, it was sooo popular and sooo famous you get a lot of complete idiots pretending to teach good kung fu, when its complete bullshit or watered down bad technique.

Ive done short stick mantis training.

    • do ur research to find a solid instructor and style that suits you. the style i train now is pretty much dirty boxing. very functional.dirtydesign1/2

    @WeLoveNoise
ive done short stick, but other than short and long stick im never really a fan of weapon forms, i much prefer empty hand stuff.

    • yeh same here although i did a weapon in sai and fan and fan has got to be one of the best unrated weapons of all time lolWeLoveNoise1/4
      under-rated meant to sayWeLoveNoise2/4
haha awesome! ive never seen a fan form, would love to!
      Hombre_Lobo3/4

    and yeh @WeLoveNoise
krav maga looks wiked, looks no nonsense. i like that a lot.

Mantis stuff and wing chun stuff is like that, just knock your opponents guard down and go for the eyes or throat.

Amicus im still finding some good youtube videos for ya of northern mantis :) (not to be confused with southern mantis!)

There are a few, but they all look a bit soft (im sure you'll agree from a karate background!), not like the club i went to.

There some clips of bruce lee doing it though.

    • we train in a park where people also practice mantis. looks fun.dirtydesign
