"In a serif typeface the letters have extra curls and bobbles, reminiscent of calligraphy..."

Lol pizza. Punch in the cock indeed!
I agree with airey, a lot of the work put into a logo isn't neccssarily going to be picked up conciously. That's the beauty of the brain, it sees things you don't even notice. Fedex logo for example. And of course cultural associations are going to directly affect the consumers opinion of a logo, that's just natural hollistic brain function.
Adrain shaunghessy has a great quote regarding cultural references in design and how these culturally aware designs are a cut above the rest.

hey turnleftonpapuga i totally agree. the whole thing is the subconscious values conveyed to the audience. these change as cultural values do obviously but to say that people don't pickup on what font is presented to them is the same as saying we're not effected by colours in advertising.
as an example a law firm wanting to convey themselves as traditional and 'mahogany panels and cigars' would stick to the trajan / times font directions. whereas a law firm wanting to distance themselves from the stuffy tradition would choose a more modern direction, sans whatever.
to say these subtleties are lost on the audience consciously would be true in many cases, but not the subconscious.

Battista is a jackass plain and simple. He is showing his ignorance of the craft by this statement - "When you're reading an article you're not thinking about the font”
