my mum is keen to get a laptop but is only really going to use it for internet browsing... she isn't the most computer literate person and hasn't the best coordination when it comes to using a mouse. She has a few bob to spend and I was pondering whether an iPad might be a solution. What say you QBNers?

I would go the netbook road,
but if she's having problem using a mouse,
the ipad is what she need

ipad is perfect for computer literate moms.
go for it. it would be nicer if you pay for it.- <this, or you're a bad soncalculator

sure, why not? just make sure you don't hold it the wrong way.

If screen size is not an issue then yes, she'd find it a near idiot-proof (no offence) web-gizmo. Only downside is if she wants to start using it as a laptop, (storage of docs, WP).
Get it from Apple, keep it pristine and return it within 14 days if unhappy

iPad definitely, it's basically the Mum computer.

my mum is the same when using a mouse although she's fine when using a trackpad.
I say laptop.
Save the ipad for when you have a newborn child to entertain.

Ta very muchly, think I'll take her to the apple store anyway so she can have a play with it. so if not an iPad, any other recommendations? I'm not massively familiar with the world of PC laptops although I've heard I should avoid Dell.

The iPad is so accessaible... Mac are easy enough to use and a iPad is EVEN easier to use! My my just turned 3 daughter can pick up mine and use it to play or read the books i got for her.
My mum has a desktop PC and se HATES using it...
iPad is the way....

we got our mum a regular laptop. nothing too fancy. 14 inches, webcam, dvd drive. decent specs, wireless mouse.
yes she does use the webcam and messengers, mainly for family overseas. she has a few dvds and music cds. i dont think shes keen on buying media online on itunes. she doesnt have an ipod or iphone. she uses it for basic stuff, browsing, email, news, youtube, online banking and a few movies. for her needs, i dont think the ipad can cut it.

yeah, i don't know, my mother uses a regular laptop. Far from computer literate, but also using a cell phone from 10 years ago. Not sure how she'd like a touchscreen. It is "cool", but is it intuitive to someone that has never used one?
Dunno, I still find it awkward to type on my iphone compared to a keyboard.

WAIT! .....
Does you Mum watch a lot of porn?
Remember that the iPad, like the iPhone, doesnt support flash so it means those .flv movies she watched on megaporn or xhamster wont work on the iPad so she'd be better with a netbook. Also, when she's frigging herself an iPad would need propping-up and would probably fall over all the time.
With a netbook she can angle it to how she wants it.:)
- oh... lol... I can't even be bothered to be offended, you are a comedy genius, I'll ask her shall I?yakismaki

People saying laptop, remember most mums barely understand concepts we take for granted like multitasking/context menus etc
