I found myself, searching for someone else, on a directory listing site the other day - site listed about three places I've lived over the last decade, housemates, directorial positions, telephone numbers.
Evidently these details have been legally heisted from publicly available resources - but there's something very unsettling about just being able to go to one site and find all this information, for free, no effort required.
I'm increasingly liking this the new, inclusive internet less and less.

A few things you can do if you're in the UK:
Make sure you're excluded from the edited electoral roll - a lot of companies use this to build up mailing lists etc. Make sure your landline is listed as ex-directory with BT. Enrol in the telephone preference scheme (TPS), and the mailing preference scheme (MPS). These schemes make it illegal for companies to cold call you.
