For graphic design programs : Photoshop, Illustraton, Indesign, etc. which is the faster (better) system?
iMac 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel i7
MacPro 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
MacPro 2x 2.25 Quad-Core Intel Xeon

the one with the most memory.

MacPro 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Although i7 are newer, you get a lot of space in there to put more hard drives if you need it, but if you can't afford the Mac Pro go with the iMac.

These support up to 16GB of RAM:
iMac 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel i7
MacPro 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel XeonAnd this one up to 32GB of RAM:
MacPro 2x 2.25 Quad-Core Intel Xeon- haha to find an app that takes advantage of that much ram. think 8 is probably too much********
- that's what Bill Gates said about 640k of RAM :)ernexbcn

if you don't have a 27 inch display I'd go with the iMac since it includes one

i do most of my work on a 27" imac with 8gig ram. If i had the option id probably slot in a SSD drive though since the shitty slow HD is seriously dragging the machine down
- I believe you do have the option...or is changing the HD on an iMac a no-no?monospaced
- no, super easy. just need some room and a lot slimming 1tb to whatever ssd does now. : (erikjonsson

The one you can afford

@monospace it can be done but you have to remove the glass and the LCD screen, it's a pain in the ass so it's better to order it directly from Apple

I run the i7, and decided to go with the solid state drive - less heat, better battery life, and I am pretty sure I get faster open / save times (I often do intensive 2 to 5 gig retouching projects). Its been a lot of fun to be liberated from the desktop based machine, because I find myself working much more interesting locations as a result.

I changed my iMac's HD when the original died. There's a YouTube video that instructs how to do it step by step. Very easy to do and you get to clean the inside of dust and other shit.

Xeon 3500 is just an i7 with support for ECC memory.
Xeon 5500 adds support for 2 CPUs and another memory controller.
everything else being equal, they're the same processor.

thanks so much for all the feedback thus far!

imac... is more than enough computer for your illy, photoshop and indesign.
macpro specs are old and so long overdue for design change. beginning to wonder if apple will even continue with towers... i know unlikely but they must be seriously rethinking.
