G'day QBN,
Im using 2 portable usb drives (both usb powered) at the same time, one seagate 640gb, one western digital 250gb.
When using them both simultaneously, my computer can freeze up for a few seconds, not only that, on one of the drives sometimes will not show folders that i know are there (and are visible when i reboot with the WD drive only), and then some folder names become a string of random characters! :/
Can anyone tell me why this may be?
is it possible to use 2 portable hard drives at once?Cheers guys.
(windows xp btw)

Never had this problem - windows or mac. Shouldn't matter if you're using 2 portable drives or 10.
Maybe it's a janky USB hub / ports / cables?

are they alimented via usb or have their own power charge,
if alimented via usb is there a double usb cord for each of them or just one,if only one, that means your comp usb isn't giving enough power to the disc causing them to act like that,
have you tried running one disc at once to see if the hdd are not damaged.solution: try getting a double usb cable for each of them,
like this one

Thanks for the replies guys!
@d_rek, yeh thats what i thought.
@geogesIII,
cheers for the help dude, both are single usb powered - no separate power cable.
maybe that is the problem as it is a laptop (which wouldnt be kicking out as much power as a desktop)...you dont know of a diagnostic tool for power monitoring do you?i might have to return it and get a non portable external drive.
hmmmmmmm- sorry I don't,
try getting a friend's cable so you can test it outgeorgesIII

so weird i was thinking this same exact thing.
I have two usb, wall powered portable drives that give me the same problems on a desktop. It drives me nuts. I have three of those extra USB hubs between the keyboard, pad, 2 portable hard drives, scanner, printer and accessorie connections, all USB.
