"Zatkin was paid 2,000 yuan (about $300) to fly,"
too cheap in my opinion. not worth it
and thats a very deceptive practice

old news.
not as common as it used to be.

It can't be $300 bucks, no way...
to fly someone over there and pay him $300 bucks, I'm sure there is a typo somewhere.

Well, that depends, these peeps are not know for having respect of humane treatment of workers in the first place, squeezing them out long days and providing a tiny salary in echange, that they end up spending on renting the workers dorms next to the factory...
and all this to meet high demands by markets on the west.

The guy from the main story already lived in Beijing, and they flew him to another part of China, not from the US.
It sounds fun, I'd do it. haha

Standard practice in Singapore to bring an "ang mo" to a meeting, especially in the advertising and design biz. It apparently adds credibility to your presentation, even though the white guy just sits there quietly, nodding his head once in a while. Note that they will bring someone who actually works for the firm, not some random tourist who gets paid 300$, although I'm sure some would consider that...
