^ with an extension tube, you could probably photograph the individual atoms...autofocus might hunt a bit.

best idea is to look at the sort of photos you want to take on Flickr, and see if you can find what lens they use.
ie. there is more than one way to skin a cat, so skin it whatever way you prefer.

macro would be more for product shots, i think. ...right?

50mm 1.4, or a 1.8 is good for selective focus shots that are common with food photography.

Yeah a 50mm f/1.8. They are dirt cheap but really good for closeups and blurred depth

Agreed with toe_knee - that's your best option for under a $100...
Here's some flickr pics

for my food stuff, i use my sigma 18-50mm f2.8 and my canon 50mm f1.4 on a crop-frame body - my style is usually similar to product photography in that i take the whole thing, lit with strobes, lots of DOF.
etc.i often wish i could get closer and shave my depth of field, so a canon 85mm f1.8 would really hit the spot for this.
i know that lara kastner, who is an absolutely brilliant food photographer, shoots [or at least used to shoot] with a canon 24-105mm f4L and a canon 100mm f2.8 macro (on full-frame):

50 1.8 on a crop frame body....
...or...
extension tube
old Nikon 50mm F2 (smoother out of focus highlights than most other lenses)
Nikon to Canon Adapteror
Tamron 90mm macro... very nice for still objects.... AF is buzzy, but for food work, who cares..I have a 85mm F1.8 Canon... it doesn't focus that close on a full-frame body, on a crop frame, it's very nice 135mm f1.8 equivilant....
