I think design matters, but not where it will solve the meaning of life or end suffering. Design is needed because humans are visual beings, and drawn to aesthetics.

hmmm, error. I see.
Have to work more than a year to understand.

I've been working for 10 years now.

Design saves lives every single day.
From highway signage to prescription labels to the way news is visually disseminated. The issue is not design's importance, but the recognition of it.
The role that design plays in objects/situations we encounter every single day shouldn't be marginalized or forgotten because of its invisible nature. It is the invisible nature of great design that allows it to be great.

lol.
I love whenever we want to try and validate our profession we always go straight to the highway signage.
Such a stupid compulsion.

perhaps you could enlighten us to a profession that is completely rewarding to the individual as well as society. Keep in mind, this profession has to be rewarding at all times.

That's right, go straight for the absolute extremes. Show me the error of my ways, identity.
- why dont you just quit your job and do something new?whereRI

I hear a lot of crying from someone who isn't happy with their own career choice(s) and not many proactive responses. If you want to hurl rocks against a wall, take your troubles to a bar-tender.

why's everybody being so fucking defensive?
shine on, bonecrusher

BoneCrusher, what's your definition of design?

Not only highway signs.
ALL. All you're typing, seeing, or is designed leuyendo. Right or wrong. But design is to evaluate processes. And that is the subject.

Ask the right question first...
What can you do with design to improve/change things. Design isn't limited to print, it is every non-natural item on this planet. Step outside of your comfort zone and try do something you previously thought as impossible for you to do. Is your chair uncomfortable... design a better one etc.

i havent read the responses, but i think graphic design can and has changed the world. think of all of the political and propaganda posters that have ever been created. you hold more power than you think - at least more than the average worker.

we're here to help other people sell things. who said design was important?
some major design trends become part of art history, if you're just shooting for longevity of your work. or design a music album or movie poster for something that'll stick around, but in the end you're not helping anyone do anything but make money

historically, graphic design is a very young profession. but look at all the fields that are part of our job: typography with its rich history, photography, scientific illustration, art... try to get a political, historical, sociological, philosophical perspective on what you do. research. put it in context.
