I am thinking about getting a train ticket from Portland OR to Boston MA.
The reason is I want to bring a whole lot of luggage - do they put a cap on this? Anyone ever tried to push the limits here? Im thinking some huge ass boxes and a bike at least.

I know Mr. Bombie thinks this thread is over, but the guideline is 36x36x36 and 50lbs. Wondering if anyone has experience bringing something that is a bit (or a lot) bigger and if they are strict about it. Things like that. Actual experience, etc.

WHO HAS BROUGHT A 500 POUND 4 foot tall box on AMTRACKY?
DID THEY CHARGE THE F**& out of you?
- Call them http://www.oakh.com/… it will be cheap and you don't need to deal with itIRS

Obviously no. Don't friggin' yell because no one has tried to game the train luggage system like you hope to. I am pretty damn sure you'd be dinged at 10x the weight limit PLUS the physical size increase. You want to know how much, why don't you contact them. They might actually have the answers you need.

You could always ship your stuff on greyhound quite cheaply http://www.shipgreyhound.com/

how do you plan on getting a 500 pound 4 foot tall box TO the train station?
sounds like you might need to rent a cross country mover to me. if you're looking to save a couple bucks pack yourself up in an empty fridge box and have yourself shipped over with your stuff. those fridge boxes are surprisingly spacious. ask janne.

Not sure why you ask us, when you could just ask Amtrak?

I went Chicago to Portland. Took something like 46 hours. I took a bike which cost 10$ (didn't even have to dismantle it, just put it in a box). I flew back an shipped my bike greyhound. That took almost a month, cost 50$ and the box was destroyed when it arrived. You can carry a large amount of stuff on the train as well. It's also BYOB. You meet strange people who are afraid of flying

we seriously need high speed rail here
- So does Canada. Train-riding just isn't in the North American culture, though.Continuity
