if the top bg image is a background of the document body, the bottom images can't also be, so your content area would have to be 1900px wide methinks

what if div A and C were flexible with a background image?
would that not be possible?

no, because they'd have to be percentage widths, which you can't combine with a fixed pixel width column. you'd need to use javascript to calculate the side column widths in pixels.
the top alone can be achieved by having one 1900 pixel wide bg on the body and centered, but i can't think of a way to create the footer without js

to be clear, I'm assuming you want the side images offscreen without scrollbars if the browser window were resized to 900px wide.

Assuming you know the width of the background images, you could throw them in divs positioned absolutely in relation to the header and footer respectively: http://formfuncadelic.com/qbn/bg…
