I've been scouring the AIGA for information about intellectual property . And pretty much found what I am looking for. But can someone, anyone - give me their perspective on this.
I will be creating a large piece of work, that I can potentially sell to other clients (lots of code and background IP)
Should i pull the elements that I think can be resold...out of the project and produce them on my own dime?

I think you might want to look into licensing vs. selling it as a product. Worked for a company once who licensed a custom CMS. There's some good jack in it if you play it right.

I don't think there's really any such thing as intellectual property anymore. If you make something good, people all over the world will rip it off, and there won't be much you can do about it.
- problem here is, it will be used for a closed corporate intranet - I just don't want to be unethical using my code/idea elsewherePersonaNonGrata
- If you can position it as a product that you are selling "off the shelf" or liscensed, you should be fine.harlequino

Are you working for them as an agency or as a work for hire (contractor/employee)? If you work for them as an agency you hold the copyright and if you are a work for hire they do. I think this is all that truly matters
